This tutorial presents the Essential Climate Variable “Cloud Properties” and related datasets. It also explains the role of clouds in the Earth’s climate system, the cloud physical properties and how clouds are estimated from satellite observations. Related datasets are the CM SAF Cloud, Albedo and Radiation from the AVHRR data record, Edition 3 (CLARA-A3, latest edition), the predecessor versions 2 and 2.1 with corresponding ICDR (CLARA-A2, CLARA-A2.1 and ICDR), and the ESA Cloud_cci (ATSR2-AATSRv3) with its associated ICDR (C3S SLSTR ICDR).

Tutorial on the Essential Climate Variable Surface Radiation Budget

The following tutorial describes the Essential Climate Variable “Surface Radiation Budget” and presents different surface radiation fluxes as well as their estimation methods from satellite observations. The related datasets are the CM SAF Cloud, Albedo and Radiation from the AVHRR data record, Edition 3 (CLARA-A3, latest edition), the predecessor versions 2 and 2.1 with corresponding ICDR (CLARA-A2, CLARA-A2.1 and ICDR) plus extra variables by C3S, and the ESA Cloud_cci (ATSR2-AATSRv3) with its associated ICDR (C3S SLSTR ICDR).

Tutorial on the Essential Climate Variable Earth Radiation Budget

This tutorial covers the Essential Climate Variable “Earth Radiation Budget” and introduces to the different long- and shortwave fluxes at the Top of the Atmosphere as well as the retrieval methods on satellite-based observations. The related datasets are the CM SAF Cloud, Albedo and Radiation from the AVHRR data record, Edition 3 (CLARA-A3), the ESA Cloud_cci (ATSR2-AATSRv3) with its associated ICDR (C3S SLSTR ICDR), NASA’s Cloud and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Energy Balanced And Filled (EBAF), Edition 4.2, NOAA/NCEI’s High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) data record (v1.2 for daily means, v2.7 for monthly means), and the C3S RMIB TSI data record on Total Solar Irradiance.

Tutorial on the Essential Climate Variable Water Vapour

In this tutorial, we present the Essential Climate Variable “Water Vapour” at the upper atmospheric level. It mentions the three types of water vapour products: Upper Tropospheric Humidity (UTH), Tropospheric Humidity Profiles (THP) and Total Column Water Vapour (TCWV). Related datasets are the CM SAF (CM SAF (1999-2015) & C3S (2016 onwards) Microwave Upper Tropospheric Humidity, the CM SAF COMBI TCWV product based on microwave and near infrared imagers, ROM SAF (2006 onwards) Tropospheric Humidity Profiles, the C3S merged Total Column Water Vapour Global Vapour product of MERIS & SSMI(S) from 2002 to 2012, and the CM SAF TCWV of SSMI(S) from 1988 to 2014 dataset.
