EUMETSAT Short Course Series

In terms of online training, 2021 was a very successful year. In the framework of the EUMETSAT Short Course Series CM SAF supported five courses with overall more than 650 participants. These online training courses are usually a mixture of expert presentations and hands-on exercises by the participants. A big advantage of online courses, besides the wide range, is that all presentations are recorded and available on the respective course website. More details and links to all courses can be found in the outreach area.

The latest course was one of the most successful ones this year. 246 registered participants wanted to learn about ‘Coding for Earth Observation’. The goal was to provide basic knowledge on working with Earth Observation satellite data by using R and / or Python code. By prepared example code in the form of Jupyter Notebooks (Python) and Markdown files (R), the participants learned opening a file, plotting a map, doing calculations and plotting the results. After a short presentation and the demonstration of some examples, everybody had the chance to try on their own using prepared tasks. More than 100 participants stayed for this hands-on session and some presented their results in the following feedback session. The recorded presentations and example scripts in R and Python are available on the course website.
